If you’ve been holding off on buying an iPad mini, you may want to keep that wallet closed for just a little longer. Apple is reportedly preparing a significant display upgrade for its smallest tablet, and it could arrive before Halloween.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to introduce a revamped iPad mini with an OLED display by the end of October. That may not sound particularly groundbreaking when OLED screens are already common across phones, TVs, and even some of Apple’s other products. But for the iPad mini, it would be a pretty substantial jump.
The iPad mini is about to glow up
The current iPad mini still uses an LCD panel, so moving to OLED should immediately give the tablet a nicer screen to stare at. Unlike an LCD, which relies on a backlight, OLED pixels can illuminate individually and switch themselves off completely. In everyday use, that generally means much deeper blacks, stronger contrast, and an image that can feel more vibrant. This technology will give the upcoming iPad mini a crisper picture and bring its display closer to Apple’s more premium iPads.
That upgrade makes a lot of sense for the mini in particular. Its compact size makes it an easy device to grab for reading, gaming, watching a movie in bed, or throwing into a bag when a full-size iPad feels like overkill. A better screen could make all of those things more enjoyable without changing what makes the mini appealing in the first place. And perhaps the best part is that we apparently won’t have to wait until 2027 to see it.
October could be a big month for iPad mini fans
The report says Apple is aiming to have the new iPad mini out by the end of October. That gives us a much narrower window than the vague release timelines that often accompany early Apple rumors. Unfortunately, that’s about where the concrete details end. Bloomberg’s report doesn’t reveal what chip Apple plans to put inside the tablet, whether its design will change, or how much the OLED model could cost.
Still, the display upgrade alone could be enough to make this one of the more interesting iPad mini refreshes in years. Apple’s tiny tablet has always occupied an unusual sweet spot: bigger and more useful for certain tasks than an iPhone, but far easier to carry around than a full-size iPad. Give that same formula a significantly better OLED display, and the next iPad mini could become a lot harder to overlook.
