Apple has historically launched its regular and Pro models side by side, but that tradition could be in for a shake-up this year. A report from The Information last November suggested that Apple may debut only the iPhone 18 Pro models in 2026, with the more affordable iPhone 18 pushed to spring 2027. A new report now adds weight to that claim, indicating that Apple plans to prioritize its premium models this year.

Sources familiar with Apple’s plans told Nikkei Asia that the company is aiming to launch three premium models in the second half of the year, including the long-rumored iPhone Fold. The shift is reportedly driven by changes in Apple’s marketing strategy and ongoing supply chain constraints. As a result, the base iPhone 18 is said to be delayed until the first half of 2027.

With this move, Apple reportedly aims to optimize resources and boost revenue from its premium lineup amid rising costs of memory chips and other components. Delaying the iPhone 18 until next year could also help Apple reduce potential production risks for its first foldable, which will rely on complex manufacturing processes and new materials that may take longer to meet quality standards.

An executive at an iPhone supplier with direct knowledge of Apple’s plans said, “Supply chain smoothness is one of the key challenges for this year, and the marketing strategy change also played a part in the decision [to prioritize premium models].”

The second-gen iPhone Air is still on the cards

The report adds that Apple has at least five new devices in the pipeline, including the base iPhone 18, two Pro models, a foldable iPhone, and the next-gen iPhone Air. While a tentative launch timeline has emerged for four of these models, the report notes that the second-gen iPhone Air is not expected to arrive this year, with its exact release window still unclear.

If the reports are accurate, Apple’s staggered launch plans could mean budget-conscious buyers will have to wait longer to get their hands on the base iPhone 18. Whether this approach is a one-off adjustment or a longer-term strategy remains to be seen.
