Anthropic is making it a little easier for paying subscribers to try its newest AI model without spending extra money. The company has announced a limited-time promotion that gives users on eligible paid plans access to Claude Fable 5 at no additional cost until July 19, 2026. There’s a catch, though: the model isn’t completely unlimited, and once you hit a usage threshold, you’ll either need to start paying or switch to another Claude model.
The promotion comes as competition in the AI assistant market continues to intensify. OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Anthropic are all racing to get users onto their latest flagship models, often using free trials or promotional access to encourage adoption. Rather than offering unlimited access, Anthropic is betting that giving subscribers enough time to experience Fable 5’s capabilities will convince many to continue using it after the promotion ends.
Claude Fable 5 is free – for now
According to Anthropic, users on Pro, Max, Team, and premium seat-based Enterprise plans can use Claude Fable 5 at no extra cost during the promotion. Instead of introducing a separate allowance, Fable 5 draws from your existing weekly usage quota. Users can spend up to 50% of their weekly plan limit on the new model before additional restrictions kick in.
There’s nothing to activate or redeem. If you’re on an eligible subscription, Fable 5 simply appears in the model picker across supported Claude apps, including Claude Web, Desktop, Mobile, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, Claude Design, Claude for Microsoft 365, Claude for Teams, and several enterprise-focused tools.
Anthropic has also extended the 50% increase in Claude Code weekly usage limits through July 19, matching the duration of the Fable 5 promotion. However, Fable 5 isn’t available everywhere. Free-tier users don’t receive promotional access, while usage-based Enterprise customers, standard Enterprise seats, and API users remain outside the offer. API access to Fable 5 continues to be billed separately at standard rates.
The free ride ends on July 19
The promotion also offers an early look at how Anthropic may position premium AI models going forward. Once users consume up to 50% of their weekly allowance on Fable 5, they face two choices. They can continue using the model by purchasing usage credits, which are billed separately from their subscription, or switch back to another Claude model and continue working within their remaining weekly quota.
Importantly, using other Claude models still counts toward the same weekly limit. That means someone who has already exhausted much of their allowance elsewhere won’t necessarily receive the full 50% allocation for Fable 5. For Enterprise customers, the rules vary depending on seat type. Premium seats receive promotional access automatically, while standard seats require administrators to enable usage credits before Fable 5 becomes available.
The promotion officially ends at 11:59:59 PM PT on July 19, 2026. After that, Claude Fable 5 will no longer be included as part of subscribers’ weekly plan limits. Anyone wishing to continue using the model will need to pay through Anthropic’s usage credit system.
The move reflects a broader trend emerging across the AI industry. As flagship models become increasingly expensive to operate, companies are shifting away from unlimited subscription access toward hybrid pricing models that combine fixed monthly plans with pay-as-you-go usage. Limited-time promotions like this allow users to sample the newest technology while giving providers a clearer picture of real-world demand before making premium models a permanent paid upgrade.
