Sam Altman’s OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has launched its first-ever certification courses designed for workers and educators. These courses will be available via the OpenAI Academy and aim to certify up to 10 million Americans in AI skills by 2030.

As part of the initiative, the company has launched two courses. The first one, called AI Foundations, helps users learn practical, job-ready AI skills directly in ChatGPT via a dedicated learning mode, where users can practise real-world tasks, receive feedback from the chatbot, and earn a certification.

The second course, called ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, is aimed at K-12 educators. This particular module is available on Coursera and focuses on integrating ChatGPT into the classroom and administrative tasks. OpenAI also plans to release more educator-oriented certification programs in the future.

This is the first time that OpenAI has offered a formal certification course. Usually, the company creates and launches AI tools (like ChatGPT) for informal exploration or self-learning. With AI reshaping workplaces, people who know how to operate and fine-tune AI tools as per their (and their company’s) requirements have a competitive advantage.

The AI Foundations course could help you use AI to boost productivity, handle tasks more efficiently, or add OpenAI’s name to your resume. For educators, ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers helps integrate AI responsibly into lesson plans, assignments, and other academic workflows. The move could also help raise AI literacy, making more people proficient with the latest-generation AI tools and boosting their productivity.

For employers, the OpenAI certification could be a sign of verified competence, while for educators, it could revolutionize how students use AI. For individuals who are simply curious about AI, the course makes AI more approachable. In the near future, OpenAI plans to expand the certification programs to a broader audience.

For now, the AI Foundations course is available through pilot programs with leading employers like Walmart, Boston Consulting Group, Upwork, and Accenture. However, the ChatGPT Foundation for Teachers is available on Coursera for everyone (it is a beginner-level course with seven modules that takes four hours to complete). Meanwhile, OpenAI is also reportedly developing an AI-powered jobs platform set to debut by mid-2026.
